Share just part of your screen.

Areacast puts a yellow frame on your Mac. Whatever is inside it becomes a screen you can share in any meeting app, or record as a movie. Nothing outside it is ever shown.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Areacast?

Areacast is a Mac app for sharing only part of your screen in video calls. You put a yellow frame around what you want to show, and Areacast turns that area into a separate screen called "Areacast". In your meeting app you pick that screen, and the people in the call see only what's inside the frame.

Who is Areacast for?

Anyone who presents from a Mac and doesn't want to show everything: people with large or ultrawide displays, product demos and sales calls, teachers and trainers, support teams, and anyone who wants to keep email, chats and other windows out of the call.

How is it different from sharing a single window?

Sharing one window shows only that app, and the share freezes or goes blank when you switch to another one. Areacast shares an area of your screen instead, so you can show several windows side by side, switch between apps while presenting, and resize what you share at any time.

Why isn't Areacast in the Mac App Store?

To show the framed area as a screen that meeting apps can share, Areacast creates a virtual display. macOS has no public way for apps to do that, so Areacast uses a system feature that Apple hasn't opened up to App Store apps (the same one other well-known display tools rely on). The App Store doesn't accept apps that use such features, so Areacast is downloaded directly from this site instead. It's signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, which means Apple has scanned it for malicious software. The first time you open it, macOS asks you to confirm, just like any app you download from the internet.

Which meeting apps does it work with?

Any app that lets you share a screen, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Slack, Webex and Discord, plus browser-based meeting tools. Areacast adds a screen called "Areacast", and you pick it in the share menu the same way you'd pick a monitor.

What do the other people in the call see?

Only what's inside the yellow frame, at full sharpness, plus your mouse pointer while it's in the frame. The yellow frame itself and everything outside it are never shown. Notification banners that pop up inside the frame are shared too, unless you turn that off in Settings.

Can I blur or remove the background behind me?

Yes. In Settings → Webcam, choose a blurred background to keep the focus on you, or a transparent one: then only you are shown, standing right on top of what you share. Areacast finds you in the picture on your own Mac; nothing is sent anywhere. The effects take some extra processing, most noticeably on Intel Macs.

Which permissions does it need?

Screen Recording, so it can show the framed area. Camera, only if you turn on the webcam, and Microphone, only if you record with your voice. macOS asks for each the first time it's needed, and you can change them any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

Does Areacast record or upload anything?

Areacast only records when you press the record button, and saves the movie on your Mac; it never uploads anything. Otherwise the picture only leaves your Mac through the meeting app you share it in. Areacast only goes online for two things: once, when you enter a license key, to check it with Gumroad (the store that sells the licenses), and, if you allow it, to look on areacast.app for a new version.

Can I record my screen with Areacast?

Yes. Click the record button on the yellow frame to start and again to stop. The movie shows exactly what you share: the framed area, your pointer and your webcam, with your microphone and your Mac's sound if you like. It's saved to your Movies folder, or another folder you choose in Settings → Recording, as a movie that plays everywhere. In the free version, recordings show the same small badge as your share.

Is Areacast free?

Yes, with every feature and no time limit. The free version shows a small "Shared with Areacast" badge in the bottom-left corner of your share. You see the badge inside your frame too, so you always know what the call sees. You can hide it 3 times for free, each time until you quit Areacast. A lifetime license for $14.99, paid once, removes it for good.

How do I activate my license?

After buying, Gumroad emails you a license key. In Areacast, open Settings → License, paste the key and click Activate. The badge disappears right away.

Does it work with multiple or ultrawide displays?

Yes. Choose the display in Settings, or simply drag the frame onto another display. On ultrawide screens, framing just the part you're working in makes your share far easier to read.

Which Macs are supported?

Any Mac running macOS 14.6 Sonoma or later, with Apple silicon or an Intel processor. There's one download for both: it runs natively on either kind of Mac.

How do I stop sharing or quit?

Stop sharing in your meeting app as usual, then click × on the yellow frame to quit Areacast. The virtual screen disappears as soon as the app quits. To uninstall, drag Areacast from Applications to the Trash.
